Complaints about parked vehicles thought to be abandoned are fairly common, according to authorities. And although there are a number of parking regulatory laws, such laws are carefully designed to protect private property--rarely allowing parking enforcement agents to seize such vehicles, said Michael Inouye, parking administrator for the Los Angeles Department of Transportation.
State law allows impounding abandoned vehicles, but only after 72 consecutive hours pass from the time an official marks their location, Inouye said.
If the vehicle is moved during that time, it is not considered abandoned, even if it is returned to the same spot. Also, a city ordinance prohibits parking trailers on city streets intended for normal vehicle parking. But Inouye said the ordinance exempts trailers less than 22 feet in length, or any trailer--regardless of length--that is designed for human habitation and used for recreation purposes, such as camping.
Officers will cite or remove the vehicle. Additional restrictions--including one that could eliminate parking such vehicles altogether--could be instituted through a petition signed by residents in that neighborhood, Inouye said. That process can be started by calling , the West Valley District engineering office at Vanowen St.
Inouye said residents may write him personally at Ramirez St. The vehicle owner is responsible for having up-to-date vehicle registration information. The time limit for parking any vehicle on a street is 72 consecutive hours, unless the street has its own specific restrictions in place. After 72 hours vehicles are considered to be abandoned. A "large Recreational Vehicle" shall include any motorhome, travel trailer, or fifth wheel trailer; any camper when it is not mounted on a truck, but placed on the ground, on a stand or otherwise stored; or any similar vehicles.
Between April 1 and October 31, an RV may be parked on the front of a residence without a back lane, provided that the vehicle is parked 0. The RV must be parked on a driveway and may not be parked on the landscaped portion of the front yard.
Because a primary goal of rest areas is to encourage safe and alert driving, many states have lenient policies for overnight RV parking. You can see the range of RV parking regulations in rest areas by examining laws in a handful of states:.
Colorado : There is no overnight parking or camping allowed in Colorado's rest areas. Minnesota : All other motorists are permitted to stop at rest areas for up to four hours, where posted.
Utah : All rest areas are posted for no overnight camping. However, extended stays are permitted and are monitored by the on-site staff and the Highway Patrol. Nebraska : Overnight camping or parking is prohibited. The maximum length of stay permitted is 10 hours.
Texas : A person commits an offense if the person remains at a rest area for longer than 24 hours or erects a tent, shelter, booth, or structure at the rest area. Casinos offer more than glimmering slot machines. For RV drivers, a casino may offer a place to park for the night. When you arrive at a casino, head to the front desk to inquire about overnight RV parking. Some casinos charge a small fee for parking, but many offer the spot at no cost. Either way, make sure to abide by the casino rules and check in so that you can be sure your presence is allowed.
Another option for free overnight RV parking is a private home. If you have friends in the area, consider asking to park your RV in the driveway.
