It is stated by Meg's principal that she used to have top grades and a top attitude before her father vanished. Her grades in school have plummeted since he disappeared, and she rarely speaks to anyone outside of her family. Like many adolescent girls, Meg is unhappy with her physical appearance. Meg hates her mouse-brown, unruly hair, braces, glasses, and considers herself a "monster" in comparison with her mother.
Meg considers herself to be 'unattractive'. She has brown eyes, pale skin, and generally baggy, worn-out-looking clothes. In the film, Meg has curly black hair and glasses. When the plot begins, no one on Earth has heard from him for over a year.
This tall, furry, many-tentacled inhabitant of the planet Ixchel cares lovingly for Meg after she is nearly destroyed by the Black Thing. Aunt Beast, like all the creatures on Ixchel, lacks eyes and has no concept of light or vision. The wife of the constable in Meg's hometown, who has twelve bed-sheets stolen from her at the beginning of the novel.
Meg's athletic and socially successful ten-year-old twin brothers who encourage her to let them fight off the bullies who make fun of Charles Wallace. During the novel, Meg and Calvin discover they can communicate with each other through a form of telepathy, called kything. Charles Wallace Murry - Meg's extraordinarily intelligent five-year- old younger brother who is capable of reading minds and understanding other creatures in a way that none of the other Murry children can.
How does Meg feel about herself? She is confident and loud. She feels like a delinquent and thinks that she isn't smart. But then she meets Calvin O'Keefe, a boy she falls in love with.
She is about thirteen years old, and is a couple of grades below Calvin, who is fourteen years old but in eleventh grade. You might say he wears a different hat at home, at school, and when he is with the Murry family. On the surface, he is a tall, thin teenage boy with freckles and blue eyes. Whatsit turns into a Centaur-like creature more beautiful than Meg has ever seen.
First, she feels she doesn't fit in. Her hair doesn't look right, she wears braces on her teeth, she isn't athletic and "normal" like her twin brothers, Sandy and Dennys, and she doesn't do well academically. According to USA Today, the novel was challenged in a school district in the state of Alabama due to the "book's listing the name of Jesus Christ together with the names of great artists, philosophers, scientists and religious leaders when referring to those who defend earth against evil.
Whatsit gives her her own faults as a "gift. She is able to use one of her largest faults -- her temper--in order to get angry rather than fearful when fighting off the forces of evil.
