What do acting coaches do

Acting classes are usually conducted in person but in the digital age we live in, acting coaches often teach online as well. The role of an acting coach is essential in the development of an actor. They boost your confidence, offer useful advice, and help you immerse yourself in the role of your character.

On-set acting coaches rehearse the lines with the actor and help bring out the best in them. While the director is focused on countless other things and has no time to devote time only to you, an acting coach stays focused on you, the actor, and helps you reach that desired emotional note in each scene.

Whether this is learned in the classroom, or through the practice of theatre making, it is learned entirely through doing. There is no theory of acting, only practice. The late great improvisation expert Viola Spolin used to teach through side coaching, an especially important skill for those attempting to assist actors to learn to improvise. Just like in sports, if the acting coach needs to stop the actors every time they need to suggest something, then the scene will never happen.

Very few have a practicable technique of acting to teach in their acting classes, and so they essentially con their students with lots of what I call fake work. These are fun, creative exercises and games that deeply engage but leave the acting student wondering how they could ever apply that work to the process of acting.

Poor acting teachers cannot articulate their technique, and when they do, they use impractical language and intangible techniques that bamboozle and frustrate the student.

Get in touch today. It requires a cool head and sympathetic ear on the part of the coach. Some coaches will focus their career efforts in a particular area, such as in coaching comedy or stage actors, whereas others tend to be open to all avenues in media; often, the need for ongoing work prevents specialisation.

Some become very successful, particularly those coaches working in Hollywood on the major motion picture circuit, although it is an incredibly competitive industry. As virtually all acting coaches are self-employed, there are no big-name employers in the industry.

John Marengo is one of the most highly recognised acting coaches working in South East Asia today. His last placement as a coach on set was working on The Hangover 2, which was shot on location in Bangkok. A love of the arts, and specifically, a love of film. Acting was not a passion that existed in my family.

Actually, my family tried to talk me out of it! I felt like I was going against the grain; they told me to go get a real job! I started as an actor, then built my own theatre company in Boston. I then decided to start teaching others. Both teaching and coaching are different. An acting coach is private, so you work on a one-to-one basis with an actor, or when they have a role they need to develop.

Sometimes you work with an actor for call-ups, and the other main form of work for a coach is actually on set, working on a movie. Teachers are classroom based, by distinction. On set, you mainly work with people who have never acted, or with experienced actors to make them work. Sometimes they have ability but lack the craft, so you cannot use the tool of vocabulary.
