Hope you enjoyed. It sounds to me like a man and woman who used to be in a relationship talk. They both still love each other but know that it can never work. It's been years since they've seen each other. They talk about what happened. She says she doesn't hate him but she couldn't do the relationship because it was destroying what she loved about him.
He says he loves her but he can't answer the questions she has about their future that she wanted, IE marriage kids. This honestly sounds like sober interpretation of a drunken conversation with an ex. The song is predated by Rise Against's "Hero of War". This is the protagonist's life upon returning home from war. I think the song is about our planet. Tears streaming down valleys that have been forgotten. Man knows he is hurting Nature. Man can do nothing to repair the damage he has caused earth.
We have to break down the old ways or we will destroy ourselves. We should recycle everything and what ever cant be recycled she be made into compost or fertilizer. If this aint love then how do we get out. I dont know. If man continues to destroy the earth he will destroy himself. How will it end. Thats when she said i dont hate you but I just want to save while there still something left to save. The video shows a polar bear that was pushed by the elephant.
Later the polar bear helped the elephant. This could be the artist attempt to show. Forgiving man or perhaps the republican party. So man tells earth that he loves her but he's not the solution. Time is passing us by. We cant let go of our ways. Man is stuck.
Rise Against is always writing about environmental issuses and I believe this song is one of those. If you watch the music video all the animals in it our either threatened or endangered. It's about loving those animals and saving them while we still can.
At the end it's the animals talking saying "We never had a choice, this world is too much noise, it takes me under". I think it has something to do with forgiveness. This song is clearly about a relationship, I realize that most people when interpreting songs are searching for some profound meaning, not here.
It's simple: The relationship at hand is dying out, the man is forgetting the things he loves about the girl the things he knows about her, because how can you truley love someone without knowing what they are or where they come from? The end. This seems to be interpreted as a couple breaking up.
I, however, think that it is about change and friendship. Let's think about this: One person was really nice at one point. But then they started to change for the worse, and eventually loose all of their original friends. One friend, however, tries to bring this person's old personality back as a final show of friendship. The person in question, however, doesn't change, but loves the friend for the show of concern.
I watched the making of the music video for it and Tim explains that it is about the republican party, how they get "beaten up" and then the mean people suddenly need help from them. Based on the video I think it's about how we all have an animal in us and it prevents us from loving each other. It's about a girl who loves a boy but he's hurting himself and she want to save him but he doesn't want her to help him. THe elephant is the symbol of the republican party and the polar bear and the rest can Mean countrys that are in war to achieve more goals.
It starts by him feeling regret for not being able to remember probably his wife but it could be someone else. But he feels he needs to change and it was the dying wish of said person that he gets his life together. I cant understand the rest. Login Register Login with Facebook. The second verse is fairly simple: it explains that where we have brought ourselves today makes it nearly impossible to step out of line and try to break free of the cycle because one person can't make the difference alone, the rest of the world will continue to contribute to it's own demise, and describes the painful impact we have left on the earth.
The bridge explains why Tim can't truly help Mother Nature - the world we live in forces us to live the same destructive way as everyone else with trash piling up - the products we buy, animals continually being slaughtered inhumanely - the food we eat, deforestation - the houses we live in, etc. Every song by Rise Against has meaning to it.
They don't care about "love" in the same sense that Hollywood has trained us to understand it, at least not in their music; they look at it from a world perspective. If a Rise Against song doesn't seem like it really means something about the world we live in, look deeper. Gotta love these guys, they are some of the few that really use their artistic abilities to influence a change for the better. HunterL on October 26, Link.
This is a great, accurate analysis to the song in my opinion. HunterL I came here looking to see if this song was related to mother nature, since I know many Rise Against songs are.
There part where you explained mother nature repeating "I don't hate you" as she is dying, made me cry. Before actively spreading awareness about climate, nature and animals, I always thought this repeating in the end meant emphasizing the terrible thing of a girl telling a guy she doesn't hate him, as if pitying him, instead of saying she loves him. It could be both. DallasLeigh on October 18, General Comment well, growing up listening to RA,i think it's ok to say that most songs by them have more than just 1 meaning, depending on the listeners point of view.
I personally think this is a love song though, but it's possible that it has another meaning,i just can't put my finger in it SilZeal on October 05, Link. I think you're right about the dual meaning type of thing - I see the love story, but I also see a Christian message in it. What if this song's about a person talking to an angel - a messenger of God, saying that he loves the angel and by angel, I mean God , but he's done too many things in his past to reconcile what he's done.
He thinks he's hopeless, and he's damned, and he cant change, but god through the angel says "I don't hate you, I just want to save you, before there's nothing left to save". The man doesn't believe the angel, and tells her to stop trying to change him "im not the answer to the questions that you still have".
Also, throughout the song, he makes several references to how unstoppable time is - how it keeps coming "there is no time like the present to drink these draining seconds" "As the day pressed on like crushing weights, for no man does it ever wait This makes me think about him not having enough time to change himself for the better.
Just something for you guys to think about, tell me what you think. Matt04 on March 12, Matt thats actually a really interesting interpretation i didnt think of it that way and usually i hate it when people connectt songs to god but i personally think its about a relationship but the girl wants to change the guy into someone he isnt and the quote "And the day pressed on like crushing weights for no man does it ever wait" sounds like big expectations to the guy and the girl doesnt love him for what he truely is but idk thats wat i think thedrunkenferret on May 20, I agree with Drunken and Matt.
I think the part where he says, "But I'm not the answer for the questions you still have" is him telling her God is her answer. Jeffreyokay on June 02, SilZeal what is ATR? General Comment see that what i like about Rise Against they dont always have to be hardcore, i dont know about everyone, but if a band sings about the same thing in every album, i'd be kind of board with them. General Comment Like many RA songs this has many meanings.
Yes literally it can be seen as a love song between a man and a woman. But a lot of the lyrics elude to a certain type of relationship: the relationship between mankind, and mother nature. When you listen to the song imagine that Tim is singing to mother nature, and the entire song will make sense.
This is a song of a relationship in which mankind wants to do good to mother nature, however, ultimately, it is in his natural to do the opposite. GaryGB on July 13, Link. General Comment Guys, they had a video on what the song meant in the making of their Savior vid. Additionally, B.
