It was about a heroic mouse named Danger Mouse who was the best secret agent and he had an inept and cowardly sidekick, a hampster named Ernest Penfold who was like a cross between Stan Laurel and Peter Lorre. Together Danger Mouse and Penfold went on vivid and wildly hilarious adventures and had to save the world from a mafia-like syndicate presided by the villainous Silas Greenback.
Besides Garfield and Friends this was another one of my favorite cartoons from my childhood! It wouldn't hurt to bring it back to television with reruns! Danger Mouse had something in it for both kids and adults alike. And on top of it all, it's non-violent! So, if you're missing Danger Mouse, just order some video tapes of it! I think Terry, bless him, was a bit sceptical at first. We soon got on like a house on fire and he subjugated himself very much into the part. We were getting paid to enjoy ourselves. It was extremely well written with great stories and no real violence, and a wonderful sense of old-fashioned Britishness. David Jason, best known for the sitcom Only Fools and Horses , played DM and his interplay with Terry Scott , who played Penfold, is at the heart of the show's success.
Jason also doubled up as the narrator, whose hilarious asides and fourth-wall breaking was way ahead of its time. From a modern perspective the animation may look crude but the writing absolutely still holds up.
The new series may be a heck of a lot slicker but it does improbably feel thoroughly in the spirit of the original. Casting aside nostalgia goggles, in many ways it actually surpasses the original. Be that as it may, the original Danger Mouse remains one of the most iconic an ground-breaking animated series in UK TV history.
