I can say that I haven't personally taken my b6 Passat 4motion out and pushed snow but the prior owner has. I have my mind set on an SUV I realize a wagon can accomodate same, but I've never been a wagon guy. On this forum I know there is a huge following, I am just not one of those guys.
I can understand wagons aren't for everyone just thought I would mention it as another option. Good luck with your search! Originally Posted by AlS6. Yeah I know what you are saying. I'd love to be able to drive them back to back in the exact same conditions and same tires. I think I'd probably prefer haldex with a haldex controller. A few weeks ago, we got hit with snow pretty good. I wanted to see how the cars would handle through the snow and ice and plowing through the occasional snow drifts. I took my 07 A3 out first, it did pretty well. After that, I took my 03 A4 Avant and drove the same route.
The A4 did the best, I would say the A3 and the S40 did pretty similar, maybe the S40 was a bit more stable. Would you otherwise rate the Mercedes 4Matic design as good as any system in dry weather, high traction operation?
The BMW xDrive does not have a center differential. For the Mercedes 4Matic, if the road surface is dry and has high traction, there is no need for the limited-slip feature to kick in. Mercedes 4matic uses a permanent front to rear split, whilst xdrive and quattro is on demand I think What advantages if any does Mercedes permanent setup have? VW GTI.

Am really looking forward for your replies in order to make sure I make the correct choice when ordering! DW58 Go Kart Champion. Location Moray, NE Scotland. Haven't you already asked effectively the same question in this thread?
No offense Rob, in the indicated thread I was comparing it to the R. But plans have changed, budget has been recalculated and I have to go with a diesel. Would like to know the difference between 4Motion and Quattro, if any. I apologize for any confusion. Avanti Go Kart Champion. Location UK.
